13 Peaks Part 10: Devil's Peak with Helen Gosnell - FULLY BOOKED, waiting list only (15 Nov 2026)

GRADE 3B, MEDIUM PACE

Part 10/11: With the end in sight, today we'll hike up Newlands Ravine with its beautiful views and cross over the saddle to Devil's Peak, our 12th peak. On the way, we'll pause at Pulpit Rock to look back over the route we have taken in the past 7 months. After summiting Devil's Peak, we'll descend the normal zigzag path to Tafelberg Road. Although it is only 7 km today, the elevation gain is 900 m and the loss is 600 m. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town. We will complete the challenge over 7 months. All hikes are open to everyone, whether or not you are doing the challenge. Since not everyone will be available for every peak, Helen will set up a dedicated WhatsApp group for those doing the challenge to coordinate catch up hikes.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close the Friday before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

Up & down by cableway to save time and energy. We traverse the north face of TM from Platteklip to IV, then decide on what to do next, based on group sentiment at the time. Some off-path hairy scrambling involved.

2 oceans, 1.5 leaders and 1 tidal pool with guest hike leader Alma Truyts (6 Dec 2026)

GRADE 3A+, MEDIUM PACE

Join Alma on her debut hike as a guest hike leader in Cape Point Nature Reserve. In an adaptation of Mike Lundy’s 2 Oceans circuit, we will start and end at a tidal pool for a refreshing post-hike swim.

The route will take us from Buffels Bay picnic site through a lovely pincushion forest, up to Rooikrans viewpoint, then down and along the rocky coast to the Cape of Good Hope. Once there, we take the boardwalk past Diaz Beach to the Cape Point parking area and then up a lovely little scrambly bit (easy even for us shorter folks) to Vasco da Gama Peak.

Then we go back past the Rooikrans viewpoint and along the coast (including some fun rock hopping) to the tidal pool, by which point we should be sweaty enough to enjoy our swim, even if it is windy!

The total distance is 16 km, so endurance is necessary. Entrance to the park is R110 for South African adults with ID, or free with a Wild Card.

Helen Gosnell will join the hike as a support hike leader. Please RSVP to Helen.

Bookings close 2 days before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

13 Peaks Part 11: Table Mountain Contour Path with Helen Gosnell (13 Dec 2026)

GRADE 2A+, MEDIUM PACE

Part 11/11: This is the final linking section taking us back to Signal Hill (our 13th peak). We will do this by walking the contour path rather than the road, all the way along the front face of Table Mountain. Once at the end, we'll hop over the busy road intersection and continue along the path, past Lion's Head and along the Lion's Rump to our final point, the Signal Hill beacon. This walk takes us around 2 sides of the City Bowl, offering views of the end point at the beginning and of the start point at the end. It is about 8 km of gently undulating path (except for the short, sharp ascent to the contour and the short, sharp descent from the contour). Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town.
Hout Bay to Constantia Nek with Andre Stander (3 Jan 2027)

GRADE 3A+, MEDIUM PACE

Max 12. Starting at East Fort in Hout Bay, the trail zigzags up past the old manganese mine. After about an hour of steep climbing, the trail levels out a bit and we follow the contour path towards Vlakkenberg (Alfie's path). The trail crosses over to Vlakkenberg and joins the Hoerikwaggo Trail. Finally, there is a fairly steep ascent of Vlakkenberg before descending 300 m to Constantia Nek with distracting views of the ziplining over Silvermist Estate. The route is well-trodden, easy to navigate and rated as moderately difficult - mostly uphill and downhill. We will have good views of Hout Bay as well as the Back Table.

We'll need to do some car shuttling/Uber between Constantia Nek and Hout Bay.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close 2 days before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

Sandy Bay Shipwreck Trail with Helen Gosnell (9 Jan 2027)

GRADE 2A+, MEDIUM PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

Enjoy a seafront meander through fynbos and dunes along the stunning Llandudno coastline. This route takes us just above Sandy Bay and further along the coast on the Suther Peak foothills.
Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

A long, challenging and adventurous hiking route on the Atlantic side, offering a secluded and steep ascent for experienced hikers. The trail begins on the Pipe Track and soon turns onto the Diagonal Route, leading to the gully itself. This route involves a sustained climb up a steep, dry watercourse with mandatory scrambling sections, where you'll need to use your hands to ascend. As you climb, you are rewarded with dramatic views of the Atlantic Seaboard and the iconic Blinkwater Needle. The upper part of the route becomes overgrown and exposed to ledges with drop-offs, and after a final scramble, we'll emerge onto the "Back Table". Due to its difficulty and exposure, the route is not recommended for novice hikers. Descent is via Diagonal or Kasteelspoort. High wind or wet weather will result in cancellation.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Saturday.

GRADE 2B+, SLOW PACE

This is an entry-level scrambling hike. From the start on the Glencairn side of Elsies Peak, the route follows the jeep track westward to a single-track path which takes us over the ridge to the Fish Hoek side of the mountain. Then it continues eastward to the base of the cliff which the route traverses around the mountain back to the Glencairn side. The route must be taken cautiously as it is over loose rock with an exposed step over at one place. There is some crawling and easy scrambling to be done which makes it exciting. The views over Fish Hoek, False Bay and Glencairn are beautiful especially from the summit, which we visit for a snack break once the traversing is finished. The hike is about 5.25 km long and involves an ascent of 450 m. It lasts between 2 – 3 hours depending on the group speed and the length of the snack break.

Please earmark Sunday 7 March as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on 28 February.

We will be staying in our own private area of the Cape Agulhas Backpackers in Struisbaai. This weekend is all about experiencing the southernmost tip of Africa, and on Saturday we will hike the incredibly beautiful Rasper Punt Trail (5.5 km) that snakes along the ocean and then turns inland to overlook the point where the two oceans meet. We will also visit the official southernmost tip of Africa and of course pop in at the harbour to greet Parrie, the resident stingray. Dipping in the Agulhas rock pools is on the cards and on Saturday night, an optional dinner at a local restaurant. Self-catering.

It is a playful, fun-filled urban walk that will leave you feeling delighted. We will end off with an optional picnic in Van Riebeeck Park.

Explore one of the lesser known peaks on Table Mountain. We'll use Rooikatkloof to get to our ascent route of Cecelia Ridge. Once we get to the Overseer's Cottage we will walk through Ash Valley to get to the start of the Reserve Peak path. The scramble up to Reserve Peak is full of interesting nooks and crannies.
From front to back with Helen Gosnell (27 Mar 2027)

GRADE 4C, MEDIUM/FAST PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

Experience half the mountain in one day. We will start off with the fun challenge of India Venster. Once at the top, we will follow the Apostles Path all the way along the top of Table Mountain until we reach Llandudno. The views along this route are spectacular: isolated sections of the mountain, beautiful sea views and stunning fynbos. Our descent route will either be Llandudno Ravine or Llandudno Buttress. The views on this hike move from the City, along the whole of the Atlantic Seaboard and finally we see the views to the south. This is a long day out. Endurance is necessary since we will hike 14 km, gain 1100m in elevation and lose 1250m in elevation. A head for heights is essential for India Venster. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Saturday.

GRADE 3D+, FAST PACE

This route involves a sustained and exposed scramble up Hout Bay Corner, requiring strong scrambling ability and confidence on technical terrain. After topping out, we’ll head to Judas Peak before descending via Llandudno Buttress. The descent includes additional scrambling and steep sections.

This is a hike for those with solid scrambling experience and a good head for heights. Not suitable for beginners or those new to exposed terrain.

GRADE 3A, MEDIUM PACE

The Leopard’s Loop is one of the most rewarding and beautifully balanced circular routes nestled on the slopes of the Helderberg. Striking a perfect chord between challenge and accessibility, the trail is 8.2 km, and we will follow the route clockwise to comfortably manage the steady, rocky initial incline. As you climb through pristine Cape fynbos landscapes and winding single-track pathways, the mountain rewards you with breathtaking, dramatic vistas of False Bay, Gordon's Bay, and the distant Cape Peninsula. While the steep gradients and occasional rocky scrambles will test your lower body strength, the stunning birdlife and the quiet peace of the mountain are well worth every ounce of effort. There is a cashless entry fee.

Please earmark the Saturday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Sunday.

Old Fisherman's Trail (Hout Bay to Kalk Bay) with Louise van Wyk (10 Apr 2027)

GRADE 4B, FAST PACE

The Old Fisherman's Trail is a spectacular and tough point-to-point day hike that crosses the rugged spine of Table Mountain. This trail retraces the footsteps of the 19th-century fishing communities who used it as a highway between Hout Bay and Kalk Bay, chasing the best ocean conditions to secure their livelihood. They carried fishing tackle, bait, and their eventual catches slung over their shoulders. The trail demands 7 to 8 hours of strenuous effort, featuring an elevation gain of over 900 m right at the start up Blackburn Ravine. While the physical toll is high, the trail rewards hikers with panoramic ocean vistas and walks through beautiful Cape fynbos. Please prepare for a full day on the mountain, including rapid weather changes. Only for the very fit. Uber rides will be necessary.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Saturday.

A hidden gem, Dark Gorge is an alternate route up the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and is reserved for the more experienced and adventurous hiker. A loose rocky section towards the top of the gorge limits the size of the group to ten. After a break at Pulpit Rock we will traverse around Devil's Peak, pay a visit to Woodstock Cave and then rejoin the contour path towards the King's Blockhouse. From here we will drop down onto the jeep track and make our way back to Newlands Forest.

GRADE 3B, MEDIUM/SLOW PACE

Max 12. This is a circular route through the restricted area of Orange Kloof. We hike along the ring road, enjoying tranquil surroundings, lovely fynbos and pockets of forest, before following the Disa Stream, under indigenous forest, in cool, shady conditions, to the waterfall at Hell's Gates where we take a tea/snack break. The route along the stream involves some caution, boulder-hopping, rock scrambling and the use of hands (mild exposure to heights and slightly technical), with a narrow rock ledge to cross at one of the rock pools (careful hand and footwork). We return via the Orange Kloof Valley/forest floor. No dogs allowed. Space is limited since this hike requires a permit.

Enjoy a lovely hike on the top of Table Mountain without the big ascent and descent. We will use the cable car to take the hard work out of the hike. From the Upper Cable Station we will hike to the highest point on Table Mountain, Maclear's Beacon. From there, we will drop into the Waaikoppie Valley and visit Orion's Cave. Thereafter, we will continue our loop through Echo Valley, and back to the Cable Station. There is some minor, relatively easy scrambling and a few ladders to climb. Online, ticket prices are R475 for an adult return fare and R130 if you are over 60. If you celebrate your birthday in May, and you are an SA Citizen, your ticket is free.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Saturday.

Camps Bay to the Apostle Battery with Tony Brown (29 May 2027)

GRADE 3A, MEDIUM/SLOW PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

This is an out-and-back linear hike in the shadows of the 12 Apostles Mountain Range. With a total distance of 16 km over moderately flat terrain you will have plenty of opportunity to gaze at the stunning views over Victoria Drive and out to the South Atlantic Ocean. Our hike will take us around five hours, with a slightly longer than usual lunch break which will give you time to explore (at your own risk) the Apostles Battery, a WWII military base built between 1939 and 1945, before we return to our start/end point above Camps Bay.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Saturday.

Traverse of the Gods and down Kloof Corner Ridge with Carmen Morris (30 May 2027)

GRADE 3D, FAST PACE

This technical traverse runs along the western face of Table Mountain, starting from the contour path above Tafelberg Road and heading south beneath the upper rock bands of Kloof Buttress. The route includes exposed sections, loose rock, and narrow traverses. The key feature is the ""dassie crawl"" — a confined, low-ceilinged tunnel with significant exposure, requiring packs to be removed and careful movement through a 10-meter squeeze. At just 26 cm high at the exit and about 10 m in length, this tunnel-like feature isn't made for the claustrophobic — or the broad-shouldered. If you're too big, you simply won’t fit, so it's worth knowing your dimensions before attempting the squeeze! After the crawl, we ascend steeply to connect with Kloof Corner Ridge.

This is a fast-paced, advanced hike requiring strong scrambling ability, a good head for heights, and comfort with exposure and confined spaces. Not suitable for beginners.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close 2 days before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

GRADE 3D, MEDIUM PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

Max 10. A moderately challenging scramble on the Atlantic side of Table Mountain, seventh of the 12 Apostles. It’s more than a hike but short of full-on climbing, so expect to use your hands for much of the way. Exposure is moderate, and there’s very little tedious slogging between the fun bits.

We’ll follow the Pipe Track to the base of the buttress. The first pitches are a good place to settle in and find your feet. After that the scrambling gets more continuous, with a few more pitches higher up.

At the top we’ll join the Apostles Path. From there the group can either descend via Woody Ravine or Kasteelspoort.

Suitable for members with a reasonably good head for heights who are comfortable scrambling. The route is unmarked, with no signs, painted arrows or fixed aids, so we’ll be navigating by cairns.

Silvermine East 6-Peak Traverse with Helen Gosnell (31 Jul 2027)

GRADE 4B, MEDIUM/FAST PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

This hike takes in 6 of Silvermine's peaks. By the end of the day we'll have walked in a large circle through much of Silvermine East. Our day begins with the immediate ascent up the rugged spine of Wolfkop (446 m). From there we will follow the ridgeline to Higher Steenberg Peak (537 m). We continue on the high trail that leads up to Muizenberg Peak (507 m). Then we cross the top of Pecks Valley to get to St James Peak (422 m), after which we drop down to the Amphitheatre basin and make our way to Kalk Bay Peak (516 m). Our final peak of the day is Maiden Peak (372 m) as we start to close the loop. The day ends with a diversion past the Silvermine Waterfall as we head back to our cars. This is a long, rewarding day out. The hiking is not very technical but endurance for a full day on the mountain is a must.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Saturday.

Perdekop Trail (+-16 km) is a moderately challenging circular route. We will hike the trail anticlockwise, starting with a long and steep climb. The trail offers a variety of landscapes, from lush fynbos and rugged mountain terrain to incredible views all around including the Wemmershoek Mountain and Dam, and on a clear day you can see Table Mountain in the distance. Fitness is required. There is a permit fee at the gate (cashless).

GRADE 3B+, MEDIUM PACE

Our day begins with the interesting Diagonal Route on the Camps Bay side of the mountain. At the top we will walk through Echo Valley to the start of the Junction Peak scramble. Junction Peak is a lesser known peak and the scrambling is exciting and a little rough. After summiting, we'll make our way back down following the Old Railway Path to our descent route, Kasteelspoort.

Please earmark the Saturday as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Sunday.

GRADE 3D, FAST PACE

A great ridge route that easily compares to Woody Buttress, but is shorter, cleaner and offers more continuous rock scrambling.

The route begins on a dirt track before heading across an open slope towards the gully between two ridges. Some bushwhacking may be required during the first 30 minutes as we make our way towards the base of the ridge. Rocky steps mark the beginning of the scrambling, after which the route follows the ridge in a continuous scramble towards the summit.

The descent follows part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail before turning off and heading back down to the starting point.

GRADE 3A+, MEDIUM/SLOW PACE

Max 20. An educational flower walk situated in the West Coast National Park. Every year there is an impressive display of wildflowers on our West Coast, where the dry and desolate region transforms into a carpet of splendour. Sightings of bontebok and zebra and others are not uncommon. There is one small hill near the start and another hill at lunchtime, nothing impossible… the rest is pretty much flat. The circular route is approximately 17 km, so some endurance is necessary. This is a permitted hike. The gate to the park opens at 7am. The entrance fee is R116, or free for Wild Card holders.

GRADE 4B+, MEDIUM PACE

A tough but rewarding hike with fabulous views. This hike starts at Coetzenberg in Stellenbosch, so the approach is from the north. The route follows the ridge line to the south with few flattish sections on the way as well some fairly easy scrambles. We'll return the same way with different views. This is a long hike so fitness is essential.

GRADE 3C, MEDIUM PACE
