Hermanus and whales with Petra Schonlau - FULLY BOOKED, waiting list only (18 Sep 2026)

GRADE 2A - 3B, MEDIUM PACE

This is a weekend filled with hikes and whale watching. Accommodation is at a 3-star self-catering guesthouse. The weekend includes a 2hr 7km hike (graded 2A) on the new cliff path on Friday afternoon where we hope to spot lots of whales and dolphins. On Saturday, we'll do a 4-5hr 11km hike (graded 2B) on the mountain above Voëlklip where we should have more opportunities to spot whales. In the afternoon, there is optional wine tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley. On Sunday, there is an optional 6hr 10-12km hike (graded 3B) at Fernkloof Nature Reserve to Galpin hut. This hike is limited to 12 people.

The cost is R1100 per person for 2 nights’ accommodation plus the club admin fee of R50. A 50% deposit is due immediately, and the balance will be due by the end of June.

Our journey begins with a steep ascent up the breathtaking (in more ways than one) Nursery Ravine. Once on top, we will complete a circuit finding some interesting stops along the way. After lunch we will return via Ash Valley, past the Overseers Cottage and descend via Leafy Ravine.

Silvermine River walk with Helen Gosnell (24 Sep 2026)

Please note that this hike takes place on a Thursday public holiday.

We'll follow the gentle River Trail in Silvermine pausing in the middle of the out and back route to have a picnic lunch (and a swim?) at the dam. Please note the later start time to tie in with lunch. [We start at 11 am]. The total distance is 5.5 km with a gentle 160 m up and down. Wild Card or a R44 entrance fee will be payable.

Perdekop Trail (+-16 km) is a moderately challenging circular route. We will hike the trail anticlockwise, starting with a long and steep climb. The trail offers a variety of landscapes, from lush fynbos and rugged mountain terrain to incredible views all around including the Wemmershoek Mountain and Dam, and on a clear day you can see Table Mountain in the distance. Fitness is required. There is a permit fee at the gate (cashless).

Epic Journey: Réunion Island Traverse

Join us for another insightful Epic Journey Presentation by members!

In June this year, Rod and Fran Dicks hiked 214 km, traversing Réunion Island over 16 days. The adventurous couple will share valuable tips on planning, packing, logistics, and costs. Come along for an exciting armchair journey across this rugged volcanic island off the African continent!

Entry is free but please RSVP because there is limited space. There is a cash bar and parking is available on-site.

13 Peaks Part 8: Constantiaberg with Helen Gosnell - FULLY BOOKED, waiting list only (10 Oct 2026)

Part 8/11: We have a gentle start to the day with the Silvermine River walk. Once at the dam we will take the route up Constantiaberg that leads us past the Elephant's Eye Cave. Once at the top of Constantiaberg, we'll make our way down to Constantia Nek via firstly the radio mast road and then through beautiful Vlakkenberg on the Hoerikwaggo Trail. The views from this side of the mountain looking north are spectacular. The route today is 14.5 km with 835 m elevation gain and 930 m loss. Car shuttling will be necessary.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town. We will complete the challenge over 7 months. All hikes are open to everyone, whether or not you are doing the challenge. Since not everyone will be available for every peak, Helen will set up a dedicated WhatsApp group for those doing the challenge to coordinate catch up hikes.

Meeting at the Paarl Berg Nature Reserve at 8am. Parking vehicles at the Braai Picnic Area. It is a gentle hike going up to the top of Paarl Rock. The hike will be followed by a bring-and-braai at the campsite.

Blinkwater Ravine with Tranquillity Cracks with Graeme Hope (18 Oct 2026)

A somewhat feared but actually well-maintained (and beautiful) route up to the 12 Apostles spine. The ascent is not hectic, but we will need to scramble over the remnants of a landslide from the 90's, hence this is for experienced hikers only. Once on top we will seek the shade of Tranquillity Cracks before a descent via Woody Ravine.

This is a fun alternative route up Table Mountain front face. It involves sections of scrambling up ledges, overgrown sections on the path and loose stones underfoot. This route is ideal for those who enjoy sections of scrambling up the mountain but want to do it at a slower pace. The highlight is the step-over near the top that makes for a great photo opportunity. Once on top we'll hike to the Cable Car for a ride down. (Additional cost for a ticket on own account).

Part 9/11: Our route today takes us up Constantia Corner, via Camel Rock, to get to where we will tackle Klassenkop (or Klaasenkop). Klassenkop has an interesting tree that must be breached to get to the summit. Our descent route will be Nursery Ravine (although Skeleton Gorge is also a fun option if the weather has dried up). Once we are back on the contour path, we'll head north and exit at at Newlands Forest. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

Max 8 hikers. A long, challenging and adventurous hiking route on the Atlantic side, offering a secluded and steep ascent for experienced hikers. The trail begins on the Pipe Track and soon turns onto the Diagonal Route, leading to the gully itself. This route involves a sustained climb up a steep, dry watercourse with mandatory scrambling sections, where you'll need to use your hands to ascend. As you climb, you are rewarded with dramatic views of the Atlantic Seaboard and the iconic Blinkwater Needle. The upper part of the route becomes overgrown and exposed to ledges with drop-offs, and after a final scramble, we'll emerge onto the "Back Table". Due to its difficulty and exposure, the route is not recommended for novice hikers. Descent is via Diagonal or Kasteelspoort. High wind or wet weather will cancel.

Gecko Trail with Andre Stander (7 Nov 2026)

Max 12 hikers. A circular hiking trail starting in the Nuy Valley, Worcester, over the Langeberg Mountain Range to Simonskloof in the Koo Valley. This is a challenging trail for experienced hikers only. On the first day we'll start from Penhill Farm and hike 14 km over rugged terrain to Simonskloof farm. The next morning we'll hike via the Nuy River Gorge back to Worcester. This route is very different from the previous day as we'll do +-14 river crossings. An easier day, but not to be underestimated. You'll also be required to carry a tent to sleep in. Hot showers are available in the camping terrain. Costs and additional details will be provided in due course.

Part 10/11: With the end in sight, today we'll hike up Newlands Ravine with its beautiful views and cross over the saddle to Devil's Peak, our 13th peak. On the way, we'll pause at Pulpit Rock to look back over the route we have taken in the past 7 months. After summiting Devil's Peak, we'll descend the normal zig zag path to Tafelberg Road. Although it is only 7 kms today, the elevation gain is 900 m and the loss is 600 m. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

13 Peaks Part 11: Table Mountain Contour Path with Helen Gosnell (13 Dec 2026)

Part 11/11: This is the final linking section taking us back to Signal Hill. We will do this by walking the contour path rather than the road, all the way along the front face of Table Mountain. Once at the end, we'll hop over the busy road intersection and continue along the path, past Lion's Head and along the Lion's Rump to our final point, the Signal Hill beacon. This walk takes us around 2 sides of the City Bowl, offering views of the end point at the beginning and of the start point at the end. It is about 8km of gently undulating path (except for the short, sharp ascent to the contour and the short, sharp descent from the contour). Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.
