GRADE 3C, MEDIUM / SLOW PACE

Max 8 hikers. A long, challenging and adventurous hiking route on the Atlantic side, offering a secluded and steep ascent for experienced hikers. The trail begins on the Pipe Track and soon turns onto the Diagonal Route, leading to the gully itself. This route involves a sustained climb up a steep, dry watercourse with mandatory scrambling sections, where you'll need to use your hands to ascend. As you climb, you are rewarded with dramatic views of the Atlantic Seaboard and the iconic Blinkwater Needle. The upper part of the route becomes overgrown and exposed to ledges with drop-offs, and after a final scramble, we'll emerge onto the "Back Table". Due to its difficulty and exposure, the route is not recommended for novice hikers. Descent is via Diagonal or Kasteelspoort. High wind or wet weather will result in cancellation.

Max 12 hikers. A circular hiking trail starting in the Nuy Valley, Worcester, over the Langeberg Mountain Range to Simonskloof in the Koo Valley. This is a challenging trail for experienced hikers only. On the first day we'll start from Penhill Farm and hike 14 km over rugged terrain to Simonskloof farm. The next morning we'll hike via the Nuy River Gorge back to Worcester. This route is very different from the previous day as we'll do +-14 river crossings. An easier day, but not to be underestimated. You'll also be required to carry a tent to sleep in. Hot showers are available in the camping terrain. Costs and additional details will be provided in due course.

Join us for an exciting morning of Dragon Boat Racing. Get out on the water, work together as a team and enjoy some friendly competition! Only 30 spots are available! Non-members are welcome and will pay our usual R100 non-member fee in addition to the cost of the activity. Please note that this activity is suitable for those who are 12 years and older.

Cost: R250 per person.

Safety briefing: A 15-minute safety briefing will take place before the activity starts.

What to bring: comfortable clothing suitable for an active morning on the water. The morning is likely to be warm, so wear a hat, apply sunscreen and bring something to drink.

13 Peaks Part 10: Devil's Peak with Helen Gosnell - FULLY BOOKED, waiting list only (15 Nov 2026)

Part 10/11: With the end in sight, today we'll hike up Newlands Ravine with its beautiful views and cross over the saddle to Devil's Peak, our 12th peak. On the way, we'll pause at Pulpit Rock to look back over the route we have taken in the past 7 months. After summiting Devil's Peak, we'll descend the normal zigzag path to Tafelberg Road. Although it is only 7 km today, the elevation gain is 900 m and the loss is 600 m. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town. We will complete the challenge over 7 months. All hikes are open to everyone, whether or not you are doing the challenge. Since not everyone will be available for every peak, Helen will set up a dedicated WhatsApp group for those doing the challenge to coordinate catch up hikes.

13 Peaks Part 11: Table Mountain Contour Path with Helen Gosnell (13 Dec 2026)

Part 11/11: This is the final linking section taking us back to Signal Hill (our 13th peak). We will do this by walking the contour path rather than the road, all the way along the front face of Table Mountain. Once at the end, we'll hop over the busy road intersection and continue along the path, past Lion's Head and along the Lion's Rump to our final point, the Signal Hill beacon. This walk takes us around 2 sides of the City Bowl, offering views of the end point at the beginning and of the start point at the end. It is about 8 km of gently undulating path (except for the short, sharp ascent to the contour and the short, sharp descent from the contour). Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

Hout Bay to Constantia Nek with Andre Stander (3 Jan 2027)

Max 12. Starting at East Fort in Hout Bay, the trail zigzags up past the old manganese mine. After about an hour of steep climbing, the trail levels out a bit and we follow the contour path towards Vlakkenberg (Alfie's path). The trail crosses over to Vlakkenberg and joins the Hoerikwaggo Trail. Finally, there is a fairly steep ascent of Vlakkenberg before descending 300 m to Constantia Nek with distracting views of the ziplining over Silvermist Estate. The route is well-trodden, easy to navigate and rated as moderately difficult - mostly uphill and downhill. We will have good views of Hout Bay as well as the Back Table.

We'll need to do some car shuttling/Uber between Constantia Nek and Hout Bay.

Enjoy a seafront meander through fynbos and dunes along the stunning Llandudno coastline. This route takes us just above Sandy Bay and further along the coast on the Suther Peak foothills. We will reach Oude Skip Point at low tide, allowing us to visit the remains of the Harvest Capella that was shipwrecked here in 1986. Our return route takes us up a short, sharp climb to Rocket Road. Please note that Sandy Bay is a nudist beach and you may encounter nudity during the hike.

A full-on camping weekend for a maximum of 14 people.

Friday: arrival, settle in and set up camp.

Saturday: we will drive to a neighbouring farm, and we’ll be dropped off at the start of the 4-hour Apex hike. The hike is an easy uphill to a plateau. Once on the plateau there are exciting rock formations to explore. Beautiful views of Southern Cederberg. At the top there is a final ascent to a beautiful cave (C graded). We'll have lunch and return the same way. For the afternoon there is swimming, relaxing and braaiing.

Sunday: we will do The Donkey Trail walk on the farm for about 2 hours. This is an uphill hike (2B). After a final swim, we'll pack up.

Cost: R560 per person, including the admin fee. There will also be a small contribution for the farmer's petrol for the transport to the Apex hike start.

Please do not pay for the weekend until you receive the invoice from the club.

Elsies Adventure Route (28 Feb 2027)

This is an entry-level scrambling hike. From the start on the Glencairn side of Elsies Peak, the route follows the jeep track westward to a single-track path which takes us over the ridge to the Fish Hoek side of the mountain. Then it continues eastward to the base of the cliff which the route traverses around the mountain back to the Glencairn side. The route must be taken cautiously as it is over loose rock with an exposed step over at one place. There is some crawling and easy scrambling to be done which makes it exciting. The views over Fish Hoek, False Bay and Glencairn are beautiful especially from the summit, which we visit for a snack break once the traversing is finished. The hike is about 5.25 km long and involves an ascent of 450 m. It lasts between 2 – 3 hours depending on the group speed and the length of the snack break.

We will be staying in our own private area of the Cape Agulhas Backpackers in Struisbaai. This weekend is all about experiencing the southernmost tip of Africa, and on Saturday we will hike the incredibly beautiful Rasper Punt Trail (5.5 km) that snakes along the ocean and then turns inland to overlook the point where the two oceans meet. We will also visit the official southernmost tip of Africa and of course pop in at the harbour to greet Parrie, the resident stingray. Dipping in the Agulhas rock pools is on the cards and on Saturday night, an optional dinner at a local restaurant. Self-catering.

You may have heard of Banksy, but Vredehoek has Manksy. A secretive mosaic artist has planted over 60 mosaics around Vredehoek. Following a route around Vredehoek that takes in many of the little eco parks, we will go on a treasure hunt to find 45 of the mosaics. It is a playful, fun-filled urban walk that will leave you feeling delighted. We will end off with an optional picnic in Van Riebeeck Park.

Explore one of the lesser known peaks on Table Mountain. We'll use Rooikatkloof to get to our ascent route of Cecelia Ridge. Once we get to the Overseer's Cottage we will walk through Ash Valley to get to the start of the Reserve Peak path. The scramble up to Reserve Peak is full of interesting nooks and crannies. Descending Reserve Peak is a lovely surprise as one walks though rock formations and clearings that are untouched and beautiful. We'll complete the round trip for the day by using Leafy Ravine to descend.

Experience half the mountain in one day. We will start off with the fun challenge of India Venster. Once at the top, we will follow the Apostles Path all the way along the top of Table Mountain until we reach Llandudno. The views along this route are spectacular: isolated sections of the mountain, beautiful sea views and stunning fynbos. Our descent route will either be Llandudno Ravine or Llandudno Buttress. The views on this hike move from the City, along the whole of the Atlantic Seaboard and finally we see the views to the south. This is a long day out. Endurance is necessary since we will hike 14 km, gain 1100m in elevation and lose 1250m in elevation. A head for heights is essential for India Venster. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

This is a hike for those with solid scrambling experience and a good head for heights. Not suitable for beginners or those new to exposed terrain.

As you climb through pristine Cape fynbos landscapes and winding single-track pathways, the mountain rewards you with breathtaking, dramatic vistas of False Bay, Gordon's Bay, and the distant Cape Peninsula. While the steep gradients and occasional rocky scrambles will test your lower body strength, the stunning birdlife and the quiet peace of the mountain are well worth every ounce of effort. The Old Fisherman's Trail is a spectacular and tough point-to-point day hike that crosses the rugged spine of Table Mountain. This trail retraces the footsteps of the 19th-century fishing communities who used it as a highway between Hout Bay and Kalk Bay, chasing the best ocean conditions to secure their livelihood. They carried fishing tackle, bait, and their eventual catches slung over their shoulders. The trail demands 7 to 8 hours of strenuous effort, featuring an elevation gain of over 900 m right at the start up Blackburn Ravine. While the physical toll is high, the trail rewards hikers with panoramic ocean vistas and walks through beautiful Cape fynbos. Please prepare for a full day on the mountain, including rapid weather changes. Only for the very fit. Uber rides will be necessary.

A hidden gem, Dark Gorge is an alternate route up the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and is reserved for the more experienced and adventurous hiker. A loose rocky section towards the top of the gorge limits the size of the group to ten. Max 12. This is a circular route through the restricted area of Orange Kloof. We hike along the ring road, enjoying tranquil surroundings, lovely fynbos and pockets of forest, before following the Disa Stream, under indigenous forest, in cool, shady conditions, to the waterfall at Hell's Gates where we take a tea/snack break. The route along the stream involves some caution, boulder-hopping, rock scrambling and the use of hands (mild exposure to heights and slightly technical), with a narrow rock ledge to cross at one of the rock pools (careful hand and footwork). We return via the Orange Kloof Valley/forest floor. No dogs allowed. Space is limited since this hike requires a permit.

Enjoy a lovely hike on the top of Table Mountain without the big ascent and descent. We will use the cable car to take the hard work out of the hike. From the Upper Cable Station we will hike to the highest point on Table Mountain, Maclear's Beacon. From there, we will drop into the Waaikoppie Valley and visit Orion's Cave. Thereafter, we will continue our loop through Echo Valley, and back to the Cable Station. There is some minor, relatively easy scrambling and a few ladders to climb. Online, ticket prices are R475 for an adult return fare and R130 if you are over 60. If you celebrate your birthday in May, and you are an SA Citizen, your ticket is free.

We return via the Hoerikwaggo Trail past the Overseers Hut and descend to the starting point via the Constantia Nek stairs.

This is an out-and-back linear hike in the shadows of the 12 Apostles Mountain Range. Our hike will take us around five hours, with a slightly longer than usual lunch break which will give you time to explore (at your own risk) the Apostles Battery, a WWII military base built between 1939 and 1945, before we return to our start/end point above Camps Bay.

This technical traverse runs along the western face of Table Mountain, starting from the contour path above Tafelberg Road and heading south beneath the upper rock bands of Kloof Buttress. The route includes exposed sections, loose rock, and narrow traverses. The key feature is the ""dassie crawl"" — a confined, low-ceilinged tunnel with significant exposure, requiring packs to be removed and careful movement through a 10-meter squeeze. At just 26 cm high at the exit and about 10 m in length, this tunnel-like feature isn't made for the claustrophobic — or the broad-shouldered. If you're too big, you simply won’t fit, so it's worth knowing your dimensions before attempting the squeeze! After the crawl, we ascend steeply to connect with Kloof Corner Ridge.

This is a fast-paced, advanced hike requiring strong scrambling ability, a good head for heights, and comfort with exposure and confined spaces. Not suitable for beginners.

Max 10. A moderately challenging scramble on the Atlantic side of Table Mountain, seventh of the 12 Apostles. It’s more than a hike but short of full-on climbing, so expect to use your hands for much of the way. Exposure is moderate, and there’s very little tedious slogging between the fun bits.

We’ll follow the Pipe Track to the base of the buttress. The first pitches are a good place to settle in and find your feet. After that the scrambling gets more continuous, with a few more pitches higher up.

At the top we’ll join the Apostles Path. From there the group can either descend via Woody Ravine or Kasteelspoort.

Suitable for members with a reasonably good head for heights who are comfortable scrambling. The route is unmarked, with no signs, painted arrows or fixed aids, so we’ll be navigating by cairns.
