    • Cape Town to Elgin

Steam train return trip to the Elgin Railway market:

Join us for an unforgettable journey as we travel on an 80-year-old steam train! The Elgin Railway Market is within an old apple warehouse converted into a bustling Steampunk, Art Deco market. It boasts local food and craft vendors, live music and is the gateway to the beautiful Elgin Valley. The original building was built in the 1940’s by Italian prisoners of war. The concrete tapered columns and curved box gutters bear testimony to the skill of those bygone craftsmen. It has been extensively renovated into a showpiece well worth a visit.

    Itinerary:

We depart at 08h05 from Cape Town (at the train platform near the AC Hotel by Marriot, Dockrail Road, Foreshore) and travel for 3.5 hours to Elgin Market.
We spend approximately two hours at the market, and head back to Cape Town arriving at 17h45.

    Costs:

Steam train cost: R540 for pensioners over 60, R675 per person, R500 per child 17 and under.

Food and drinks at the market are for your own cost and there will be a parking fee at the AC Hotel.

Adult non-members of ComeHike pay R100 visitors fee.

Please note that there is a price increase from 1 November 2025. The Ceres Rail company has agreed that ComeHike can book at “old year prices” and for this reason, booking closes on Friday, 25 July 2025.

Payment confirms your booking and is due by 25 July 2025. Please pay amount due into the ComeHike bank account, reference your name/Elgin and send the proof of payment to kasia.szymanski.coetzee@gmail.com and laura.knight@telkomsa.net.

A circular route hiking up Cecilia Ridge, through the aqueduct to see the drip disas that will hopefully be in season and then back down Skeleton Gorge. On the way up we will take the lesser-known scrappy but beautiful shortcut up Rooikat Ravine. Both the way up and the way down requires scrambling and comfort with steep, sandy paths. The route is fairly strenuous with 840m elevation gain. It is a long day out and it is nice to take time slowly walking through the aqueduct so the pace will need to be fairly steady before and after the aqueduct.

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

A short but very rewarding hike at one of the Cape Peninsula's most iconic locations. A hike through the beautiful fynbos will furnish you with some amazing views over Hout Bay, Noordhoek and the Atlantic Seaboard. With some short steeper sections you will still feel that you've earned the views when you arrive at the summit to be welcomed by a stunning 360 degree vista. For those that are looking for a little more from the day, I am also planning to put on another short hike directly after this to explore the historic Manganese mines above East Fort which date back to 1910.

    GRADE 2B, SLOW PACE

We follow the Pipe Track in the direction away from Table Mountain. After rounding Woody Buttress we get to our route up the ascent path which is steep and requires a little short and easy scrambling here and there. It is shady for a large part of the ascent of about 350 metres. Once on top of the ravine we join the Pilgrim’s Trail and hike along it to Kasteelspoort which we descend to return to our starting point. The distance hiked is about 6.5 kms and the route takes about 4 hours depending on the group speed and the length of the snack break taken and any side excursions. The idea is to get back to the start by lunchtime.

Please earmark Sunday 1st of February as an alternative hiking day in case of predicted poor weather on the Sunday 25th January.

A long, challenging and adventurous hiking route on the Atlantic side, offering a secluded and steep ascent for experienced hikers. The trail begins on the Pipe Track and soon turns onto the Diagonal Route, leading to the gully itself. This route involves a sustained climb up a steep, dry watercourse with mandatory scrambling sections, where you'll need to use your hands to ascend. As you climb, you are rewarded with dramatic views of the Atlantic Seaboard and the iconic Blinkwater Needle. The upper part of the route becomes is overgrown and exposed to ledges with drop-offs, and after a final scramble, we'll emerge onto the "Back Table". Due to its difficulty and exposure, the route is not recommended for novice hikers. Descent is via Diagonal or Kasteelpoort. High wind or wet weather will cancel.

Then it continues eastward to the base of the cliff which the route traverses around the mountain back to the Glencairn side. The route must be taken cautiously as it is over loose rock with an exposed step over at one place. There is some crawling and easy scrambling to be done which makes it exciting. • Table Mountain

    GRADE 3D, FAST PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

This technical traverse runs along the eastern face of Table Mountain, starting from the contour path above Tafelberg Road and heading south beneath the upper rock bands of Kloof Buttress. The route includes exposed sections, loose rock, and narrow traverses. The key feature is the "dassie crawl" — a confined, low-ceilinged tunnel with significant exposure, requiring packs to be removed and careful movement through a 10-meter squeeze. At just 26cm high at the exit and about 10 meters in length, this tunnel-like feature isn't made for the claustrophobic — or the broad-shouldered. If you're too big, you simply won’t fit, so it's worth knowing your dimensions before attempting the squeeze! After the crawl, we ascend steeply to connect with Kloof Corner Ridge.

This is a fast-paced, advanced hike requiring strong scrambling ability, a good head for heights, and comfort with exposure and confined spaces. Not suitable for beginners.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close the Friday before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

We have been extremely lucky to book the brand new Baviaans Canyon Trail. The trail will include 5 days hiking – 4 nights on the trail in glamping tents, as well as 1 night of accommodation before and 1 night after the hike.

It is a slackpacking trail - bags and food are transported from each overnight hut to the next - so all you have to carry is a day pack. It is described as ‘moderately difficult’ with four days of 16km and one of 8km. Reasonable fitness is essential.

The trail goes through Paradise Kloof, a remote network of narrow slot canyons, four-meter-wide, one-hundred-metre-high cliffs on each side, that open up into hidden secret ravines with green tree forests. On other days hikers will ascend to high ridgelines and plateaus, with spectacular panoramic views across this untouched wilderness.

Like the Leopard Trail, there are plunge pools and freshwater tanks at every hut with hot water gas showers and full cooking amenities.  A wood burning stove is in each communal catering hut to keep us warm at night.  Each sleeping hut has two bedrooms with two beds in each bedroom (no more bunk beds) and a flush toilet for each hut. True glamping luxury!

There is a special introductory cost of R6210/person (5 days of hiking, 4 nights on the trail and accommodation at the start and end of the trail included).
